I was watching two flies bouncing off the upstairs windows at work...

'I was watching two flies bouncing off the upstairs windows at work. Two days later, I saw that one of the flies was dead on the windowsill. I wondered if the other fly had died, or had somehow escaped the fate of its colleague. Without warning, a bird flew in through the top window. I was taken aback by this sudden influx of life and had no idea how to respond. I tried to chase the bird back out of the window, but the bird was confused and I had no way to communicate that what I was doing was for the good of both of us. I eventually got the bird out, using a broom to guide it up to the window. When I looked down at where the fly had been, it was no longer there.' colour photograph, 2008
